History of the Practice
The practice was established in 1963 in Lexington as a small

Multifamily Housing, Retirement Community Design, Commercial Architecture, Site
Planning, Community Planning, Land Planning, Military Master Planning and
Urban Renewal Planning. |
 |
Planning
Starting with the Urban Renewal program in the 1960s,
the office has prepared plans and reports for: Neighborhood Plans, Residential
Subdivisions, Recreational Facilities and other community development master planning
studies |
 |
Multi-Family Housing
Starting in 1967, the office has prepared Site Plans
for over 5,000 dwelling units plus construction documents for over 2,500 units in projects
ranging in size from 7 to 586 units. |
 |
Retirement Communities
This area of recent work includes the site planning
for two retirement communities in Hopkinsville, KY and Richmond, KY. and
construction documents for over 200 dwelling units plus a nursing home expansion. |

|
Military Master Planning
Since 1984, the office has been a planning, site
design and facilities database consultant to GRW Engineers, Lexington, KY
and CH2M Hill, Atlanta, GA and Dayton, OH for the master
planning of over 30 Air Force and Air National Guard bases. |
 |
Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial
In 1987 the office was selected by a national
competition to design the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Frankfort, KY. The
project was dedicated in November 1988 and has become a primary visitor attraction for the
state capitol. |

HelmCAD
With the advent of personal computers into professional practice, the
office began using word processing, spreadsheets and databases in 1983. With the
introduction of practical and affordable CAD (Computer Aided Design) in the late 1980s,
the office converted almost entirely to this technology using AutoCAD® as the software of choice for all architecture and
planning projects. This work resulted in a keyboard based system for the
efficient production of design documents now known as "HelmCAD" by staff and
colleagues. |
